Our VDC And its Functions

Our country Nepal is divided into five development region, 14 zones and 75 districts. All of them are a

a political division which is made to develop all part of the country equally. Here, in our country “Village Development Committee is the smallest political system of our country which is created by the joining two or more than two villages to develop the village of our country. In each VDC there are 9 wards.The local body of a country is VDC.

There is the provision of the composition of VDC in Local Self-Government Act 2055 BS . According to this act, there are 13 members altogether in the VDC. One from each Ward a VDC has composed one chairperson, one vice-chairperson and nine wards member. The vectors of that VDC are elected the chairperson and vice-chairperson. Here to be a vector, one must attain the age of 18 or above and resident of the concerned VDC. The respective wards of the VDC are elected the nine ward members. To be a candidate for the posts of chairperson, vice-chairperson and ward members the following qualification are needed:

  • He/she should be a Nepali citizen,
  • Attain the age of 21 years,
  • Should be the resident of concerned VDC,

The VDC nominated two members including women from the social worker, Jana jati and underprivileged class.Village Council is the another body to support in the work of VDC .53 members are composed in it. They are:

  • One chairperson of VDC – 1
  • Vice- chairperson of VDC -1
  • Ward Chairpersons -9

( One from each ward )

  • Wards members - 27

( Three from each ward)

  • Nominated member - \(\frac{6}{53}\)

( Nominated on the basis of socio-economic different ethnic group )

Functions of a VDC

In Nepal, there are more than 3900 villages. So, in rural areas VDC plays a vital role for all development of our nation. VDC is trusted with several duties and responsibilities. They are :

  1. It develops transport facilities and also VDC implement the programmes to develop the agriculture.
  2. It helps to provide clean drinking water, construct and repair wells, taps and ponds.
  3. It conducts adult and non-formal education, established a library in the village area and also run pre-primary and primary schools.
  4. It preserves and promotes language, culture and religion.
  5. It launches programmes on the basis health education, family planning and control of waste materials and also set up health post.
  6. It helps to provide clean drinking water, construct and repair wells, taps,ponds.And also launches programmes on tree plantation, conservation of forest, natural vegetation and protection of the environment.
