Introduction to Citizen

The word Citizen is derived from the latin word 'Civis' which means the person who lives in a city. In the ancient time, there were small city-states in Greece and Rome. At that time city dweller was called the citizen. In ancient Greece, the women, slaves, low classes people and servants were not recognized as a citizen because of political rights. Nowadays all people living in a country like women and men, old or young, poor or rich, illiterate, all people of the town and village etc.

A citizen is a person who is recognized the member of a state under the law of a nation by having the rights of the state. The citizen must be an inhabitant of the particular country and should belong to the country. A citizen has right to vote in the election of the parliament and can be the candidate in the election of a nation. There are two types of people living in a country, they are residents and citizen. All people can't be the citizen of a country.

In the case of Nepal, a newly born child from the Nepalese father or mother in Nepal is directly the citizen of Nepal. People coming from other countries and residence are not known as the citizen of Nepal. They are called as Aliens. They cannot use any rights and law of the nation but can get the protection from the nation. They can't hold any governmental post and can't have the right to vote in the election. A citizenship of a nation is given to its citizen after the age of 18 which is a legal document or identity granted by the country.

Citizen is the backbone of its nation. All citizen should have positive and good manner towards its nation. Citizens are also responsible for developing the nation. They should involve in social work and developmental work or activities of a nation to developed the nation. A loyal citizen of a nation should always protect its public properties and rights. The public properties of a nation are like a public water tap, temples, ponds, monasteries,public building and so on. The important role thing of a citizen is to protect its nation and developed it.
