Nation and Nationality

The word 'Nation' is derived from Latin word "natio" which means people. A group of people living in particular area or territory under the same law, sovereignty, constitution and a government is known as a nation. A nation is also called as a country.

According to the Interim Constitution of Nepal 2063, the nation is defined as "having common aspirations and united by a bond of allegiance to national independence, integrity, national interest, and prosperity, the Nepalese people endowed with multiracial, multilingual, multi-religious and multicultural specialties collectively constitute the nation".

Nepal is an independent, sovereign, secular, indivisible, inclusive, federal democratic republic country. Many languages are spoken in our country such as Newari, Magar, Tharu, Maithili, Tamang, Sherpa, etc. which can be taken as the mother tongue but the common language used in our country, Nepal is Nepali which is used in all over the nation. We all people living in Nepal are called as Nepali/ Nepalese.

The word 'Nationality' is derived from the word 'Nation'. The status of belonging to a particular nation by birth or naturalization is known as nationality. Everyone has a gender, race, sexual orientation and a nationality. A person's nationality is where they are a legal citizen, usually in the country where they were born. We are born in Nepal so our nationality is Nepali.

Nation and nationality are the two sides of a coin. Being a nationality of a nation, we have duties and responsibilities towards our nation. We should promote and preserve our nationality to be a good citizen. Our nationality is our identity. Our nationality is the pride of our nation because it is the product of our past glory, art, architecture, customs, literature, culture and tradition. We must preserve our culture, tradition, and national properties in order to hand it to our upcoming generation.

We should always respect our nationality and understand its importance. Every citizen should be proud to their own nation. All Nepalese should have the strong feeling of nationality and should have unity among all to develop the nation. Every citizen should work for the welfare of a nation by his/her own interest. Our duties are to respect our national anthem, national interest, national flag, national color, animal and all other things which reflect our nation. We should fight to protect our nation.
