There are four campuses of the public University of Wolverhampton in Staffordshire, Shropshire, and the West Midlands of England. The Wolverhampton Tradesmen's and Mechanics' Institute, established in 1827, and the Wolverhampton Free Library, which expanded in the 19th century and offered technical, scientific, commercial, and general classes, are the university's historical foundations.

The Municipal School of Art, which was established in 1851, combined with this in 1969 to become the Wolverhampton Polytechnic.
