In 1870, Federation University was founded in Ballarat as The School of Mines. Since then, we have developed and evolved, joined forces with other organizations, formed regional and international alliances, and graduated more than 123,000 people.
The following institutions preceded us: Ballarat University College, Wimmera Institute of TAFE, Ballarat School of Mines, Ballarat Teachers' College, State College of Victoria, Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education, Ballarat College of Advanced Education, Ballarat University College, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education, and the University of Ballarat.
Today, Federation, which has campuses in Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland, and the Wimmera, is the biggest educational institution in the region of Victoria. Since we serve both the TAFE and higher education sectors, we are dual sector.
Our main goal in five words, we’d say transforming lives and enhancing communities. That’s what we believe education can (and should) do. We want every student to graduate with the knowledge and skills they need to follow their dreams and make a positive contribution to society.
We support and celebrate diversity, we partner with industry (local and global) and we make sure that what we’re delivering to our students is at the forefront of tertiary learning. Federation University Australia is a modern, progressive university providing high-quality vocational and higher education across a national and international network of campuses. Our University has a distinguished history dating back to 1870, making it the third oldest higher education provider in Australia.
