Originally founded in 1882 as a further and higher education institution, the University of Luton attained university status in 1993. After the University of Luton and the De Montfort University campus in Bedford merged in 2006, the university's name was changed to the University of Bedfordshire.
With around 20,000 students from more than 100 countries, the University of Bedfordshire collaborates with about 40 academic institutions in the UK and abroad to offer a variety of programs, from foundation degrees to doctorates.
Over forty percent of its student body is made up of parents who have never attended college. Over half of older returners to education come from ethnic minority or black origins, making up over 70% of the population.
