Its rich history began in 1878 with the founding of the City and Guilds of London Institute by the City of London Corporation and sixteen livery companies (guilds), which were customarily in charge of apprentice programs and craftsman training.

The institute was established to enhance the education of engineers, craftspeople, and artisans.
