1. Literal Comprehension
The poem decribes the life of a young athelete who was formerly praised for his athletic abilities and triumphs. He died prematurely and has just been brought to his burial. The people from his town who once praised him now lament his passing. The peom considers the fleeting nature of existence and the transitory nature of elegance.
2. Interpretation
The poem examines the notion that the athelete's early demise is a type of achievement. The poem Implies that because the athelete passed away when he did, he will always be regarded as a hero at the height of his achievements, never having to deal with the deterioration that frequently comes with ageing. His burial procession is adorned with the laurel erwath that he once wore in victory. Housman offers an ironic perspective on the fame and accomplishment, suggesting that it is preferable to pass away young and in awe than to continue living and fading into oblivion.
3. Critical Thinking
The speaker compliments the athelete because he has passed away at the time when his name is still at the top . However, I take issue with the speaker. I believe that life is supposed to be experienced, not to be sacrificed merely for the sake of glory. However, if the speaker is encouraging the athelete to accept an inevitable demise, I agree with him.
4. Assimilation
I became aware of how certain death is after reading this poem. No matter how old, how young, hoe famous, or how infamous one is, everyone must pass away. But it is preferable to pass away early than to live to become infamous.
