Four Levels of Mr. Know All

Four Levels of Mr. Know All

1. Literal Comprehension:

The story was is written by W. Somerset Maugham. The narraation starts with the narrator aboard SS. The ship is sailing from San Francisco to Yokohama, Japan, in the early 20th century. The narrator finds it annoying to have share a cabin Mr. Kelada, afterwards referred to as Mr. Know All. Mr. Kelada's actions irritate the narrator and the other passengers, which leads to the conflict Mr. Kelada adopts a persona of expertise and experience, gaining the moniker " Mr. Know All". He gives unwelcome advise and corrects poeple all the time. The story's turning point is when Mr. Kelada feels humiliated after failing to correctly estimate the price of necklace. In Yokohama, Mr. Kelada disembarks from the ship to bring the tale to a close.

2. Interpretation:

The narrative aims to portray behaviours of white Americans to Negros. Mr. Kelada was a black man and Maugham didn't want to share his journey's delight and happiness with Max Kelada. Similarly, the author can be attempting to convey to us and demonstrate the compassion and character of women. The story might be teaching us to be skeptical, even of distant relatives who are quite near to us. The reality inside cannot ever be represented by the outside. Even though Mr. Kelada is despised by everyone, he is the best illustration of mankind.

3. Critical Thinking:

- Did Mr. Kelada possess all the knowledge?

- Is it allowed for a passemger to carry wine with him while travelling?

- Should a husband truly be suspicious about his wife's action?

4. Assimilation:

After reading this story, i got to know the nature of people. Being friendly to everyone doesn't bring us respect and love everytime. So from now I will be friendly to those who are kind.
