Four levels of The Tiny Closet

Literal Comprehension:

Tiny Closet is a short drama by William Inge where he has shown Mr. Newbold, who is an organized and tidy man living in the house of landlagy Mrs. Crosby. Mr. Newbold has a tiny closet which he wants to be protected and not approached by anyone, not even the landlady. However, the lady manages to sneak in and open the closet with her friend despite of being warned and told not to. While Mr. Newbold hides inside a closet and hears every conversation between the ladies, he also listens them badmouthing about him and making him look pathetic as they saw many beautiful hats inside his closet. They throw thw hats with hatred and move away and then Mr. Newbold takes out a hat pin right away and while crying, he goes towards Mrs. Crosby to kill her which is obvious in the last scene.

Interpretation:

Here the author aims to depict the frailties, curiosities and jealousness that charaterize human nature. The author particularly highlights women's curiosity about other people's private lives and their envious tendency when discussing other's private lives.

Critical Thinking:

- How can a well grown man cry over such small critisism?

- Does it hurt people's ego so much that they intend to kill anyone?

- Why are the ladies here not loving the hats and Mr. Newbolds work? Aren't women naturally attracted to such beauty products?

- How can Mr. Newbold not have personal door lock to his room?

Assimilation:

After reading the drama, I am now more concious about someone's privacy. We shouldn't be rude to anybody as we dont know who is hurting how. We should  care about sentiments and egos. We should appreciate someone's passion and motivate more rather than criticising for no good reasons.
