Corruption: A Major Social Problem

In this chapter, we discuss about the corruption, types, effects, and measures to prevent corruption. Grade 8 Social Studies, Reference Notes.

Corruption:

Corruption means to use the state machinery, authority and a power in an illegal and unauthorised way to get personal benefit in the form of commission or misusing public fund or budget. Nepal has been in the almost top list of corrupted country because of strick rules and regulations, poor economy, almost no accountability, nepotism, and many other reasons. 

Corruption can be found in four ways (types). They are:

  1. Bribery,
  2. Relatives tend,
  3. Misappropriation of government property, and
  4. Exploitation policy.

Effects of Corruption are:

  1. Government loses credibility.
  2. People are forced to pay undue money even for fair work.
  3. Poor and socio-economically deprived people don't get justice.
  4. It causes conflict and violence in the society.
  5. The Economic and social process of development will be affected.
  6. It hampers overall day to day in the administration of the country.

Measures to control corruption are:

  1. Implementation of good governance, accountability, transparency and effective rules, and regulations.
  2. General awareness against corruption.
  3. Strict law, rules and monitoring.
  4. Civil society, media, etc. have to discourage the corruption by bringing it into the public.
  5. The corrupt officials and people against whom the charges of corruption are proven should be socially boycotted.
