Sentences in the form of Interrogative, Affirmative and Negative

Affirmative

Negative

Does he sing a song?

He sings a song.

He does not sing a song.

Does he play football?

He plays football.

He does not play football.

Can he drive a bus?

He can drive the bus.

He cannot drive a bus.

Did Anu write some poems?

Anu wrote some poems.

Anu did not write any poems.

Note:

  • If there is an auxiliary verb in a sentence, do not change the form of a main verb while transforming a sentence.
  • If there is not an auxiliary verb in a sentence, always change the forms of a verb when we add or remove did/does to transform a sentence.

Structure for sentences with an auxiliary verb:

Sub+ aux+ verb+.................(affirmative) - He should inform the police

Sub+ aux+ not+ verb+........(negative) - He should not inform the police

Sub+ sub+ verb+..................?(interrogative) - Should he inform the police?

Structure for sentences without an auxiliary verb:

Sub+ main verb+.................. ..... (affirmative)

Sub+ do/did/does+ not+verb(1)..........(negative)

Do/does/Did+sub+verb(1)............?(interrogative)

  • Use do not or do if there is a V1.
  • Use does not or does if there is a V5.
  • Use did not or did if there is a V2.

General rules:

  1. We usually change affirmative imperatives into negative as follows:
  • Verb+...........
  • Do not+verb+.......
  • Let+ object+ verb+.....
  • Let+ object+not+ verb+.....
  1. These words change while transforming sentences.
  • Some- any
  • and so- and neither
  • already- yet
  • too- either
  • a lot of- much/many
  1. By only changing the following words, we can change the sentences into negative ones.
  • always - never
  • either...or... - neither...nor.
  • some - no
  • some of/any of- none of

Things to remember:

  • Transformation is changing the form of a sentence without changing its meaning.
  • If there is an auxiliary verb in a sentence, do not change the form of a main verb while transforming a sentence.
  • If there is not an auxiliary verb in a sentence, always change the forms of the verb when we add or remove did/does to transform the sentence.
