Artificial Breathing, Drowning, Electric Shock and Burns in Grade 9

Artificial Breathing (Mouth to Mouth Respiration)

Patients becomes unconscious sometimes because of accidents. It is difficult to breathe and patients needs artificial breathing. The patient of electric shock and drowning need the first aid of artificial breathing.

The steps of artificial breathing are as follows:

  • Lay the patient making lower part of the body slightly up . Keep the head a bit back, make the neck and trachea straight, extend neck and raise the chin.
  • Clear the air way (remove the foreign body from mouth and neck)
  • Open the mouth with the chin up with one hand, closing the nostril with thumb and index finger of another hand.
  • Blow the mouth of the patient by joining mouth to mouth so that chest of patient should be swollen with air.
  • Breathe mouth to mouth once in 3-4 seconds.
  • Let the wind come out after blown.
  • Continue this process till the patient breathe own-self.
  • Then transfer the patient to health institutions as far as possible.

Drowning

The condition of being unable to breathe , entering water into nostrils and mouth, causes suffocation due to drowned into water like river, pond etc is called drowning.

Symptoms of drowning

  • Victim feels difficulty in breathing.
  • Dirty things can enter into mouth, nose of victim.
  • Victim can be in subconscious and unconscious condition.
  • The different types of body such as lips, tongue can be swollen and bluish.
  • There can be lot of water in respiratory tract and lungs of victim which leads him to death.

First Aid to Drowning

The First Aid of drowning are as follows:

  • Drowned victim should be rescued with the help of rope, wood or rubber tube.
  • Clear foreign body from the nostrils and mouth.
  • Artificial respiration should be given if breathing has stopped.
  • Put off wet cloth and tight cloth from the body of patient.
  • If a lot of water has been swallowed by victim then press on stomach laying him flat to vomit water.
  • Send the patient to the hospital as soon as possible.

Electric Shock

When we come to contact with live wire then the current enters into our body which harm us. It is called electric shock. The use of electric devices carelessly also cause electric shock. It makes our heart beat uncontrollable and it may lead to death.

Symptoms of Electric Shock

  • The victims will be unconscious due to low breathing.
  • Disorder of heart beat.
  • There will be burnt mark at the place of electric shock.

First Aid to Electric Shock

  • If the accident had occurred at that place where there is no switch to put it off, then we have to use bad conductor such as dry bamboo or wood to separate patient from the current.
  • If the victim is unconscious and is not able to breathe, then he should be given artificial breathing.
  • Place the victim in rest condition by covering him with warm cloth.
  • Patient should not be allowed to eat cold food and liquid food at least one hour.
  • Burnt part of the body and wound should be treated.
  • The victim should be sent to hospital as soon as possible.

Burns

Burning takes place not only due to the fire but also due to electricity, sunshine, hot things etc etc. There will be swelling mark on the skin if burnt with metal or thing. But if it burns with hot water there will be blister on the skin. The burning affects the skin at first but if deep burns it affects muscles, nerves etc.

The symptoms of burns

  • Blisters are seen on burnt skin.
  • Skin is burnt and wounds occur.
  • Victims feels thirsty.
  • The rate of pulse increases.
  • Urination decreases.
  • If the burnt is deep, the patient will be unconscious.

First Aid to burns

  • Victims should be separated from the fire and put out the fire.
  • Blanket or any thick cloth should be used to put out the fire if the cloth of victim is burning.
  • Burnt part should be submerged into water for ten minutes.
  • Do not burst the blister and do not use medicine without doctor's suggestion.
