The science of psychology is complete only with the study of behaviour, mental processes and organisms’ behaviour toward their environment. It is studied through scientific psychology.
The goals of Scientific Psychology are listed below:
1. Understand :
The first goal of scientific psychology is the establishment of facts and principles through which behaviour can be better understood. Different scientific methods enable us to evaluate and explain the facts and relationships of behaviour and mental processes. E.g.; jealousy is often considered as a reflection of basic insecurity growing out of distrust of one; capabilities. Also, understanding psychology is valuable in dealing with social and natural problems.
2. Predict:
Understanding leads to better prediction and control of behaviour. Predictions of the mental activity of the individual’s action can be made through psychology because behaviour is the outcome of a great many conditions. A psychologist can predict the actions if s/he knows all the laws affecting an individual at the moment. A successful prediction is based on a thorough knowledge of the stimuli which provides/ provokes the behaviour.
3. Describe:
The information gathered through the scientific research method enables us to accurately and completely psychological facts and relationships when adequate descriptive information can be made and explanations are proposed to help understand these facts and relationships. For example information gathered in a survey on the frequency of smoking cigarettes with high nicotine among college students would tell they have a high risk of lung diseases such as bronchitis.
4. Influence and Control:
Finally, when enough understanding and ability to predict has been acquired, we can sometimes intentionally influence people in ways that improve and enrich their lives. It has helped not only the individuals but also the institutions and associations to secure better adjustments to the situation. Certainly, psychologists have helped people understand behaviour and mental processes through knowledge and principle.
5. Improve the quality of life (Subjective well being of life):
The ultimate goal of psychology is to relieve humans from stress, frustrations, conflicts, and anxiety. This applied aspect of psychology tries to solve human problems by developing positive interrelationships between each other. So, it enhances optimism, feeling of self-worth, confidence, willpower and finally satisfaction to every aspect of human life.
