Its origins date back to 1918 when History was included as one of the topics at Tri-Chandra College's inception. Later, Professor Gokul Chandra Malhotra (Shastri) taught Culture at the bachelor's level. Culture was established as a separate postgraduate discipline in 1959, with the Department of Culture offering courses in Religion & Philosophy, Archaeology, Pre-History, Iconography, Architecture, and Numismatics. In 1971, the agency was renamed the Central Agency of Nepalese History, Culture, and Archaeology (NeHCA).
