The Central Department of Library and Information Science was established in 1995 (2052 BS) under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. From the year of establishment, the department started teaching postgraduate bachelor's degree courses for one year (B.Lib.Sc.). Such man-power became middle-level professional human resources. In order to cope with the information explosion age, specialized professional human resources were the need of the time. In this regard, in 2002 (2059 BS) TU has decided to start the Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc). This was the landmark for the professional development of librarianship in Nepal. After completing 10 batches of the yearly system, in 2014 (2071 BS), the semester system has been journeyed to the 7th batch.
The first Head of the Department was Dr. Madhusudan Karki, along whom Professor Dr. Mohan Raj Pradhan, Associate Professor Rudra Dulal, Associate Professor Bhim Dhoj Shrestha, Late Assistant Professor Nirmala Shrestha, Late Assistant Professor Lila Dahal were the faculties of the department. Among them Ass. Prof. Bhim Dhoj Shrestha continues till the day and all others are newly appointed faculties in 2017 from the last three years. The Present Head of the Department is Assistant Professor Lila Nyaichyai, PhD. Assistant Professor Nira Manandhar, Assistant Professor Parbati Pandey, and Assistant Professor Sarita Gautam are the faculties of the department at present.
The graduates from the departments are now in distinguished professional positions. for instance, the deputy administrator of TU Bishnu Aryal, Chief Librarian of TUCL Indra Prasad Adhikari, Prakash Thapa, Gita Giri, Undersecretary Yadav Chandra Niraula, Undersecretary Upendra Prasad Mainali, Assistant Professor of Central Department of Nepali Department Ashok Thapa, Ph.D, Kamala Sharma, librarian of the Parliament library, Prem Adhikari, Anju Rajbansi, Anita Bhattarai, Sagar Subedi, Nima Dhital, and many others are some of the names who achieved significant post in their professions.
The Course of Masters' in Library and Information Science (MLISc.) academic program prepares students for careers in information management and librarianship. This Academic Level covers a wide range of topics, including information organization and retrieval, research methods, and information technology. Students also complete a practicum in a library or information organization.
The MLISc. program is designed for students who want to work in a variety of settings, including public libraries, academic libraries, special libraries, and information technology companies. Graduates of the program are prepared for a variety of careers, including librarian, information specialist, information architect, and knowledge manager.
Absolutely! It’s evident that the realm of Library and Information Science (LIS) is laden with both aspirations and obstacles. Expectations soar high, triggering sharper challenges. While an individual can spark change, the full execution demands a unified team effort—comprising the amalgamation of CDLIS faculty, staff, and students.
Delving deeper into the landscape, the statistics from the Nepal Library Association’s directory paint a stark picture: only 118 professional librarians cater to Nepal’s needs, with Tribhuvan University grappling with a shortage of 54 librarians in its 39 filled positions. This scarcity underscores the critical shortage of human resources within the library domain. Nonetheless, CDLIS has admirably fulfilled its duties for 28 years within its limited resources and graduated around 250 professionals. However, the enrollment rate, at approximately 20 students per semester, is able to complete the course with fewer students. Many students elongate their course completion period.
