The Central Department of Nepalese History, Culture, and Archaeology holds a long-standing history within Tribhuvan University. Its origins trace back to 1918 when History was included as one of the subjects at Tri-Chandra College's establishment. Later, Professor Gokul Chandra Malhotra (Shastri) introduced Culture at the Bachelor's level. In 1959, Culture became a separate subject at the postgraduate level under the Department of Culture, offering various courses such as Religion & Philosophy, Archaeology, Pre-History, Iconography, Architecture, and Numismatics. In 1971, the department's name was changed to the Central Department of Nepalese History, Culture, and Archaeology (NeHCA).
In 1972, following the implementation of the New Education System, the department expanded its offerings to include intermediate-level courses, incorporating Cultural Tourism and Museology. Over time, the courses have been regularly updated based on the changing requirements and expert recommendations. Presently, the department follows a Semester system, adhering to the academic calendar of Tribhuvan University. Additionally, it collaborates with esteemed international partners and universities to provide students with high-quality academic learning experiences.

To produce expert manpower in the fields of culture, tourism, archaeology, museology, numismatics religion and philosophy by providing academic programs that are nationally and internationally recognized.
