Sociology and Other Social Science

Sociology & Other Social Science have a very intense relationship with each other. The social sciences are subjects concerned with how humans interact with the world, and sociology is interested in the study of society.

Also, sociology differs from other social sciences in that it is more general and covers human interaction from a broad dimension whereas the other social sciences are specific. They are as follows:

  • Sociology and Anthropology
  • Sociology and Psychology
  • Sociology and Political Science
  • Sociology and Economics
  • Sociology and History

1. Sociology and Anthropology

These two disciplines are like twin sisters and they are mainly similarities between sociology and anthropology.

Similarities:

  • Both study human behavior, social interaction and social organizations and
  • Both are concerned with how societies are organized and why people act as they do.

Differences:

Sociology Anthropology
Mainly a study of modern community and social phenomena Mainly a study if community and culture
It uses surveys, observation, interviews, questionnaires, and other techniques in its investigations. They use methods but they also go and live in the communities under study. They make use of direct observations and interviews. They focus on culture.
Mainly based on the modern ‘civilized’ and ‘complex’ societies. Concerned with the simple, uncivilized, or primitive societies.

2. Sociology and Psychology

Social Psychology is defined as the science of the behavior of the individual in society showing the relationship between society and psychology. Sociology & Other Social Science have a very intimate relationship with each other.

Similarities:

  • Both are positive science and employ scientific methods.
  • They give support to each other as both studies about society.

Differences:

Sociology Psychology
It deals with the social processes of human society. It deals with the psychic process of human beings.
It is General science. It is Special science.
The scope is broad and the youngest discipline of social science. The scope is limited and it is older than sociology.

3. Sociology and Economics

Similarities:

  • Economics is influenced by sociology while economic forces are highly determined by social environments.
  • Similarly, sociology is influenced by economics since sociology explores how economic powerhouses create economic policies to make the economic systems.

Differences:

Sociology Economics
It studies the social relationship and social processes. It studies the economic behavior and relationship in a society.
It is General science. It is Special science.
The scope is comprehended as a whole society. The scope is restricted.

d. Sociology & Political Science

Similarities and Differences:

Political science mainly deals with political theory and Government Administration alone whereas, sociology refers to the study of all aspects of society. Sociology stresses interrelationship between social institutions including Government whereas, political science deals mainly with the government.

Sociology deals with social, political, economic, cultural, and other aspects of society, and studies will be social institutions such as family, marriage, religion, kinship, caste, and so on. But political science provides political data to society.

e. Sociology and History

Similarities and Differences:

History is now being studied from the sociological point of view. The study of history would be meaningless ” without the appreciation of social significance. It is also said that history is past sociology, and sociology is present history.

Sociology History
Sociology is abstract.  History is concrete, based on facts
Sociology is a relatively young social science.

 

It has a very short history of its own. It is not even two centuries old.

 History is an age-old social science.

 

It has a long history of more than 5000 years.

 

It is General science.

 

 

History is a special science.
