  1. a) Define the concept of Operation management. How is operation management changing in the manufacturing and service organization of Nepal?
    b) Define yield Management? How would apply the yield management concept in a Hotel?
  2. a) Why does the company outsource? Explain the risk associated with outsourcing.
    b) What is capacity planning? What are the steps to be considered incapacity planning? Explain.
  3. a) The monthly demand at pizza Hut for its new Burger in 2015 has been tabulated below

    i) Calculate demand for January 2016 by using 3-period simple moving averages.
    ii) Use the exponential smoothing method to forecast the number of units for April to January. The initial forecast for April is 124 units; α=0.1
    iii) Which is better (using Mean absolute deviation): the 3-month average or the exponential smoothing?
    a) Explain the major difference between dependent demand and independent demand.
  4. a) Students arrive at the Administrative Services Office at an average of one every 15 minutes, and their requests take on average 10 minutes to be processed. The service counter is staffed by only one clerk. Judy Gumshoes, who works eight hours per day? Assume Poisson arrivals and exponential service times.
    i) What percentage of time is idle?
    ii) How much time, on average, does a student spend waiting in line?
    iii) What is the probability to wait Three minutes for customers in a system?
    iv) What is the probability that an arriving student (just before entering the Administrative Services Office) will find at least one other student waiting in line?
    b) What is aggregate planning? Explain the relation of aggregate planning with the Master Production Schedule.
  5. a) The state and local police departments are trying to analyze crime rates so they can shift their patrols from decreasing rate areas to areas where rates are increasing. Police are contacting by phone a random sample of 1000 residences for data on crime for the past 12 months for one area. The results are as follow;

  6. a) What is product design? How does automation help in service sector like banking and hotels to improve productivity? Explain with Example.
    b) Yantra India Ltd. is a supplier of speedometers to Speed Auto Ltd. of 60 cc two-wheeler. It supplies 20,000 speedometers to Speed Auto annually. At speed auto, the ordering cost per order is Rs.5, and the carrying cost is 2.5% of the average inventory value. The price of single units is Rs.200. The Company presently has a policy of placing 10 orders every year. Advise the management of Speed Auto as to wheeler it should continue with its present policy or switch over to the EOQ model.
