An Interview with Doctor Bhagawan Koirala

Here is an interview with Dr. Bhagawan Koirala , a senior Cardiothoracic surgeon at Gangalal Hospital Bansbari, Kathmandu. Read the interview and learn about various heart diseases.

Reporter:  Heart diseases are quite famous these days. Most of the people are getting heart diseases. Could you please tell us about heart diseases?

Dr. Koirala:  Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affects our heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems. The term "heart disease" is often used interchangeably with the term "cardiovascular disease." The cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as those that affect your heart's muscle, valves or rhythm, also are considered forms of heart disease.

Reporter: What exactly is a heart attack? Would you mind telling us about the heart attack?

Dr. Koirala: Not at all. A sudden occurrence of coronary thrombosis, typically resulting in the death of part of a heart muscle and sometimes fatal is known as a heart attack.The death of heart muscle occurs due to the loss of blood supply. The loss of blood supply is usually caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery, one of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. The death of the heart muscle, in turn, causes chest pain and electrical instability of the heart muscle tissue is defined as a heart attack.

Reporter: Heart patients are increasing day by day. I wonder if you could tell us what are the causes of heart disease.

Dr. Koirala: Yes, absolutely. Heart disease is the most dangerous disease. People could die in seconds because of it. There are many things people should take care of to avoid heart diseases. Some major causes of heart diseases are Smoking, including secondhand smoke, High amounts of certain fats and cholesterol in the blood, High blood pressure, High amounts of sugar in the blood due to insulin resistance or diabetes, and Blood vessel inflammation.

Reporter: I see, Would you possibly let us know the common symptoms of the heart attacks, doctor?

Dr. Koirala: Great question! It is really important to know the symptoms of heart attack. Some common symptoms of the heart attacks are discomfort, pressure, heaviness, or pain in the chest, arm, or below the breastbone, Discomfort radiating to the back, jaw, throat, or arm, Fullness, indigestion, or choking feeling (may feel like heartburn), Sweating, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness, Extreme weakness, anxiety, or shortness of breath, and Rapid or irregular heartbeats. If you recognise these symptoms in a person, immediately refer him to a hospital or consult with a doctor.

Reporter: Yes obviously doctor. Finally, I'd appreciate it if you tell us what precautions we should take against this deadly disease.

Dr. Koirala: Sure. Some precautions of heart disease are we should stop smoking, control in cholesterol foods, stay active and do various exercises daily, maintain sugar level and eat healthy foods and fruits.
