Kathmandu's Koteshwor is home to the thriving and expanding Kathmandu Forestry College (KAFCOL), a publicly traded enterprise. Since the college's founding in 2005, it has run a BSc in Forestry program in partnership with Tribhuvan University in Nepal and a Diploma in Forestry program in partnership with the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) of the Government of Nepal.
Since 2012, Salzburg University in Austria and Kathmandu Forestry College have worked together to jointly offer an MSc in Geographical Information Science and Systems (GIS). Additionally, in collaboration with Tribhuvan University, we launched a brand-new MSc in Natural Resource Management and Rural Development (NRMRD) in 2015. The institution has also been working on outreach and research initiatives for forestry, biodiversity, and natural resource management. The Nepal Agroforestry Foundation, a national NGO that promotes agroforestry, and a group of experts in forestry and natural resource management jointly founded the college.
The goal of Kathmandu Forestry College is to establish itself as a leader in forestry and natural resource management education and research. Through education, research, training, and outreach in multi- and trans-disciplinary fields (focusing on forestry and natural resources management), KAFCOL aims to produce qualified and competent human resources, develop resourcefulness, and expand its network to address the continuously growing challenges of sustainable development in Nepal and South Asia.
The mission of KAFCOL is to produce qualified and competent human resources, become resourceful, and spread its network through education, research, training, and outreach in multi and trans-disciplinary fields (focusing on Forestry and Natural Resources Management) for addressing the ever-increasing challenges of sustainable development in Nepal and beyond.
Dr. Jhamak B. Karki
We are entering into an era of opportunities that is surrounded with challenges. The main challenge for us is the shift from city-centered small building with additional hired facilities to a bigger building that will be sufficient to cater all our needs, with clean environment, in the lap of forests needed for practical. However, it is bit far compared to the present location.
