ABOUT CAMPUS

In 1987, Tribhuvan University's Institute of Science and Technology founded the Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (CDHM) at its Kirtipur Campus. CDHM has been delivering MSc and PhD programs in Meteorology and Hydrology for over 30 years. However, a BSc in Meteorology program was established at the Trichandra Campus of TU in 1973. In the last three decades, CDHM has graduated 200 pupils. Graduates of CDHM have gone on to work in a variety of sectors, including the National Hydrological Meteorological Agency, academia, commercial consultancies, NGOs, and INGOs, with some holding leadership positions in respective institutions. Our research is internationally known, our students are highly valued by employers, and our alumni make major contributions to academia, industry, and government.

The primary goal of these courses is to train professional workers and conduct cutting-edge scientific research in the fields of meteorology, hydrology, glaciology, and climate science. CDHM has a reputation for generating competitive meteorologists and hydrologists with excellent academic records. CDHM provides not just theoretical and laboratory-based courses, but also substantial practical techniques to help students develop competent knowledge in a variety of subjects. The CDHM curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including hydrology, water resources, weather forecasting, cryospheric processes, climate change, hydrometeorological disasters, numerical modeling, and air pollution. CDHM's courses are designed to increase career opportunities by teaching topic knowledge and practical skills.

Vision

To be a preeminent institution in the country/region for research, education, and outreach in hydrospheric and atmospheric science.

Mission

  • Recruit and teach students with great academic and leadership potential, providing them with the scientific and personal abilities to generate discoveries and transfer their knowledge into innovations for the well-being of society.
  • Produce competent human resources with high abilities, morale, and value sensitivity to meet rising challenges and needs.
  • Develop CDHM into a national/regional educational and research powerhouse for atmospheric and hydrospheric science.
  • Exploring the idea of resource generation to become self-sustaining.
  • Increase public awareness of atmospheric and hydrospheric sciences through outreach activities.

Core Values

  • Scientific integrity
  • Dedication to teaching, research, and service
  • Innovation in academics and research
  • Collaboration and collegiality in all

Objectives

  • To meet the scientific need for skilled manpower in the field of hydrology and meteorology in the context of the present geographical situation.
  • To prove advanced knowledge to the students according to recent trends and developments of the subject throughout the world.
  • To enable the students to perform research in their field of specialization utilizing the facilities available in the department.
  • To develop research activities and capacity building of partners in water and water-related sectors.

Goals

  • To have the best meteorology, atmospheric science, hydrospheric science, and climate science programs in the region, attracting a large number of highly qualified students. The department also aims to increase graduate and PhD students to at least 40 students per year.
  • To establish the Center for Weather and Climate Risk (CWSR) to solve weather and climate-related risk problems.
  • To make CDHM the leading national center for data assimilation and uncertainty quantification (ensemble forecasting and predictability), partnering with operational centers to support public needs and advance sustainability.
