Master of Education (M.Ed.) is a two-year program offered at constitutional and affiliated campuses under the Faculty of Education, spread across different regions of the country. The program includes professional (pedagogical) core courses and specialization courses. Specializations offered include Curriculum and Evaluation, Educational Planning and Management, English Education, Nepali Education, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Health Education, Physical Education, Economics Education, Geography Education, History Education, and Political Science Education. Students choose one area of specialization. Both the core and specialization courses have been updated and implemented since 2009.

Program Objectives

The primary goal of the M.Ed. program is to develop highly qualified academic professionals such as teachers, teacher educators, educational planners, administrators, system analysts, and experts in education. Specifically, the program aims to:

  • Produce skilled and competent teacher educators,

  • Prepare efficient educational planners, administrators, managers, supervisors, and other educational professionals,

  • Encourage innovative practices in education,

  • Develop educational leaders and experts who can bring positive transformation to the country’s education system.

Key Features

Teaching Methods

The M.Ed. program employs a mix of instructional methods, including lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, guest lectures, seminars, term paper presentations, case studies, problem-solving activities, practical experiences, and fieldwork. These varied techniques help students build skills in self-learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Instruction Days

An academic year usually consists of about 150 teaching days, excluding admission and examination days. A theory course carrying 100 marks generally involves around 165 hours of lectures and five periods per week. Courses with 50 marks include about 75 lecture hours and three periods per week. Practical courses require more contact hours as specified in the syllabus. Under the semester system, 48 contact hours correspond to three credit hours.

Practicum

Practicum is a vital part of the M.Ed. program. It gives students hands-on experience by involving them directly in activities at campuses or higher secondary schools. Each student must complete three activities: classroom teaching, internship, and curriculum evaluation related to their specialization. Students focusing on educational planning and management will engage in alternative activities instead of classroom teaching. Practicum usually takes place during or after the second year and lasts for six weeks.

Thesis Writing and Evaluation

Thesis writing is almost mandatory within the student’s area of specialization. Only students who pass all first-year courses are allowed to start thesis work. The thesis must be written under the direct guidance of a faculty member from the campus or department. The Department Research Committee sets the format and approval process for thesis proposals. Evaluation includes both written submission and oral defense (viva voce). The quality of theses is monitored by departmental Research Committees and Guidance and Evaluation Committees.

Attendance and Evaluation

Students must maintain at least 70% attendance in each subject to be eligible for annual exams; in the semester system, 80% attendance is required to sit for final exams.

Examinations are conducted by the Office of the Controller of Examinations at Tribhuvan University at the end of each academic session. Students must pass all exams to earn the M.Ed. degree. In the semester system, final exams are held by the examination section of the Dean’s office.

Evaluation methods for practical courses are set by subject committees.

Minimum passing marks are 40% for theory papers in the earlier system and 50% in the semester system. For practicum, the pass mark is 50%.

Graduation Requirements

The M.Ed. program lasts two academic years. The degree is awarded upon successful completion. To graduate, students must:

  • Pass courses totaling 1000 marks as prescribed, with passing grades in all subjects; or in the semester system, complete 69 credit hours including professional and elective courses in their specialization,

  • Complete the program within the time frame set by Tribhuvan University’s Faculty Board and Academic Council.

  • Third Division: 40% and above

  • Second Division: 50% and above

  • First Division: 60% and above

  • Distinction: 75% and above
