The curriculum was updated in 2009 to align with current academic and educational needs.
Program Objectives
This program aims to produce well-trained professionals in the education sector. The main objectives are:
To prepare qualified teacher educators
To develop educational planners, managers, and administrators
To encourage innovative teaching practices
To train leaders capable of transforming the education system
Key Features of the Program
Teaching Methods
Teaching methods include a mix of lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, seminars, guest lectures, case studies, problem-solving activities, and practical experiences. These approaches help students develop independent learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
Academic Calendar
Each academic year generally consists of 150 teaching days, excluding admission and exam periods. A 100-mark course typically requires 165 teaching hours, while a 50-mark course requires 75 teaching hours. In the semester system, 3-credit hour courses consist of 48 classroom hours.
Practicum
Practicum is a required part of the program, giving students real-world experience in campuses or secondary schools. Students must complete activities in three areas: classroom teaching, internship, and curriculum evaluation. Those specializing in Educational Planning and Management follow a different practicum plan. The practicum usually takes place after the second year and lasts for six weeks.
Thesis Writing
Writing a thesis is compulsory in the specialization area. Only students who pass all first-year courses are allowed to begin their thesis. A faculty member supervises the work, and the topic must be approved by the Department Research Committee. Evaluation is based on both the written thesis and a viva (oral defense). The quality of the thesis is managed by departmental research and evaluation committees.
Attendance and Evaluation
Students must attend at least 70% of classes (annual system) or 80% (semester system) to be eligible for final exams. Exams are held at the end of each academic session and are conducted by the TU Examination Office or the Dean’s Office (for the semester system).
To pass, students need at least 40% marks in each theory paper in the annual system and 50% in the semester system. For the practicum, the pass mark is 50% in both systems.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate with an M.Ed. degree, students must:
Complete 1,000 marks in total (or 69 credit hours under the semester system)
Pass all courses, including the thesis and practicum
Finish the program within the timeframe set by Tribhuvan University
