Academic and Administrative Rules for Postgraduate Students/Residents
The postgraduate students are required to undergo full-time residential training.
Students must strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
A maximum of two weeks’ leave is allowed per year in hospital-based clinical and para-clinical programs such as MD/MS, MDS, and MD Ayurveda.
For other postgraduate programs, leave and vacation policies follow Tribhuvan University’s regulations.
All postgraduate programs prohibit private practice or any private assignments; students must focus exclusively on their training.
Clinical programs (MD/MS, MDS, and MD Ayurveda) include three months of community-based teaching and learning, as mandated by the Nepal Medical Council.
Following completion of the clinical program, Nepalese graduates must serve one year at a government-assigned location, as per directives from the Ministry of Health & Population.
Eligibility
Candidates must hold an MBBS or an equivalent degree from institutions recognized by the Government of Nepal.
Registration with the Nepal Medical Council is mandatory. Foreign candidates must be registered with the medical council of their respective countries.
One year of work experience is required, except for MDGP and MD/MS in Basic Medical Sciences programs.
Candidates must score at least 50% (passing marks) in the entrance exam conducted by the Medical Education Commission to qualify for the merit list.
Exam Format
The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with a single best response format, offering four options (A, B, C, D).
The question distribution is approximately 30% recall, 50% understanding, and 20% application.
Duration of the exam is 3 hours, which includes a one-time voluntary restroom break allowed only after the first hour.

Admission Criteria
All Nepalese and foreign candidates must take the common entrance examination.
Separate merit lists will be published for Nepalese and foreign applicants.
Candidates must obtain a minimum of 50% marks to be eligible.
Admission is granted based on merit, through an open counseling process when applicable.
