Overview of the Program
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) is a two-year postgraduate program offered by the Faculty of Education (FoE) under Tribhuvan University. It is available at both constituent and affiliated campuses located throughout the country. The program includes core professional/pedagogical courses and specialization subjects.
Students can choose to specialize in one of the following areas:

English Education
Nepali Education
Science Education
Mathematics Education
Health Education
Physical Education
Economics Education
Geography Education
History Education
Political Science Education
These courses were updated and implemented starting in 2009.
Program Objectives
The main goal of the M.Ed. program is to prepare highly skilled education professionals. Specifically, it aims to:
Develop competent teacher educators
Produce skilled educational planners, administrators, supervisors, and education experts
Encourage innovative approaches in education
Build strong educational leaders capable of transforming the education system in Nepal

Teaching Methods
Teaching in the M.Ed. program uses a mix of strategies such as:
Classroom lectures
Group discussions
Demonstrations
Guest lectures

These methods aim to help students grow in self-learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Academic Calendar
Each academic year includes around 150 teaching days (not counting admissions and exams).
A 100-mark theory subject generally includes 150 lectures with 5 classes per week.
A 50-mark subject involves 75 lectures and 3 classes per week.
Practical subjects may require more class time, as outlined in the course syllabus.
Under the semester system, a 3-credit hour course includes 48 hours of teaching.
Practicum
The practicum is a vital part of the M.Ed. program. It gives students real experience in teaching and educational activities. Each student must complete three components:
Classroom teaching
Internship
Curriculum evaluation in their subject of specialization
Those specializing in Educational Planning and Management may do alternative tasks instead of teaching. This practicum lasts six weeks and is completed during or after the second year.
Thesis Writing and Evaluation
Writing a thesis in the area of specialization is nearly mandatory. Only students who have passed all first-year courses can begin thesis work.
The thesis must be done under a faculty supervisor.
The proposal format and approval process are guided by the Department Research Committee.
Evaluation includes both written work and a viva (oral defense).
Thesis quality is reviewed by the Research and Evaluation Committees within each department.
Attendance and Evaluation
A minimum of 70% attendance is required to sit for final exams (80% in the semester system).
Final exams are held at the end of each academic session by the TU Examination Office.
Semester exams are managed by the Dean’s Office examination section.
For practicals, evaluation methods are set by each subject’s committee.
Passing Marks
Annual system: 40% pass mark in theory, 50% in practicum
Semester system: 50% minimum in both theory and practicum
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, students must:
Successfully complete 1000 marks of coursework with passing grades
In the semester system: 69 credit hours including core and elective courses
Complete all coursework within the time limit set by the TU Faculty Board and Academic Council
Grading System
Grades are awarded as follows:
Third Division: 40% and above
Second Division: 50% and above
First Division: 60% and above
Distinction: 75% and above
Eligibility
Students must have a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Additional subject-specific qualifications may be required. Under the semester system, applicants must pass an entrance test to gain admission to their chosen specialization.
Course Structure
The M.Ed. program consists of three main types of courses:
Core Courses (Professional) – 300 marks
Specialization Courses (including Elective) – 600 marks
Obligatory Courses
Teaching Practice – 50 marks
Thesis Writing – 50 marks
Total: 1000 marks (500 marks each year)

In addition to coursework, students must conduct independent research and take part in teaching and educational activities related to their chosen subject area. Thesis writing and practicum must both align with the student’s field of specialization.
