Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Anthropology is a two-year postgraduate program divided into four semesters. The program consists of 18 papers and a compulsory thesis to be completed in the fourth semester.

In addition to the core courses, students may also choose from a set of optional courses based on personal interest and the availability determined by the department or campus.

Objectives of the Program

The M.A. in Anthropology aims to:

  1. Provide updated knowledge of anthropological theories and methods.

  2. Train students in fieldwork techniques essential for anthropological study.

  3. Produce skilled professionals who can contribute to Nepal’s development.

  4. Promote values of human rights and social justice.

  5. Prepare students for advanced academic and research work in Anthropology at par with international standards.

Admission Requirements

Students eligible to apply must have completed a Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines recognized by Tribhuvan University:

  • Anthropology

  • Sociology

  • Social Work

  • Nepalese History, Culture and Archaeology

  • Psychology

  • History

  • Home Science

  • Geography

  • Economics

  • Political Science

  • Education

  • Management

  • Law

  • Medicine, Engineering, Forestry, Agriculture, or Animal Science

Entrance Examination

  • All applicants must sit for a one-hour entrance exam conducted by the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

  • Those who do not appear or fail to secure the minimum qualifying marks will not be admitted.

  • Admission is strictly based on merit ranking and seat availability at the Central Department of Sociology or respective campus.

Duration and Evaluation

  • The total duration of the program is two years consisting of four semesters.

  • Each semester runs for six months, and students must appear for a university exam at the end of each semester.

  • A minimum of 80% class attendance is mandatory to be eligible for examinations.
