The Master of Writing and Literacy Studies (MWLS) is a two-year (54-credit) program offered by the Department of Language Education (DLE) at Kathmandu University. It provides specialization in writing, grounded in both theory and practical literacy studies. The program draws from disciplines such as the humanities, social sciences, management, applied sciences, and technology.

MWLS equips students with advanced writing and communication skills, preparing them for careers in academia, media, research, international relations, diplomacy, and public service. The curriculum includes core, specialization, professional, elective, and practical components such as internships, research projects, and dissertations; balancing rhetorical training, digital communication, and multidisciplinary writing practice.

This program addresses a national need for qualified professionals in writing and literacy. It aims to:

  • Develop formally trained scholar-teachers in writing and literacy.

  • Promote a writing-focused academic culture supported by writing centers and structured curricula.

  • Extend the role of writing and literacy in broader educational contexts, including digital and adult literacy.

  • Establish writing and literacy studies as a recognized academic discipline in Nepal’s higher education system.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Writing and Literacy Studies (MWLS) will be equipped to serve as teachers, writers, editors, researchers, professional educators/trainers, and education administrators. Upon completion of the program, they will be able to:

  • Teach writing-intensive courses across diverse academic and professional fields.

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research on writing, literacy, and related areas.

  • Pursue impactful roles in sectors such as diplomacy, business, education, and non-profit organizations.

  • Contribute to institutional growth through revenue generation, human resource development, and capacity-building initiatives.

ENROLLMENT

Students are enrolled in Fall (August-December) every year. The standard annual intake is 25. Attention is given to invite diversity of students in terms of ethnicity, gender, and geographical origins including foreign nationals. The eligibility criteria for enrollment is similar to other two year graduate programs of School of Education (Bachelor’s degree in any disciplines with minimum second division or CGPA 2.5.). Applicants from any discipline can opt for the program. Admission tests include written examination, interview, and group discussion. Past publications in credible platforms are also considered.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

For graduation a student must meet the following requirements:

  1. Satisfactory completion of all courses prescribed for the particular area of the study in which the degree is granted.

  2. A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.

  3. One must pass the level within four years from the date of admission into the program, failing which all the grades and cumulative grades will get cancelled automatically.
