Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Anaesthesiology – Tribhuvan University

Anaesthesiology is a medical specialty focused on patient care before, during, and after surgery. It includes patient assessment, pain relief, life support, and critical care management. Anaesthesiologists also manage pain during childbirth and are actively involved in treating critically ill patients.

This course is ideal for those interested in delivering anesthesia services in surgical and obstetric settings, managing pain and critical care, teaching medical students and residents, and contributing to research and academic advancement in the field.

Objectives of the Program

After completing the course, the graduates will be able to:

  • Assess and prepare patients for anesthesia

  • Manage anesthesia during surgeries, childbirth, and diagnostic procedures

  • Monitor and restore critical body functions in seriously ill or injured patients

  • Lead and teach in cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation

  • Manage various pain-related conditions

  • Train and supervise healthcare personnel in anesthesia and critical care

  • Conduct research to improve patient care and clinical outcomes

  • Demonstrate leadership, creativity, and sound judgment in the field of anesthesiology

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold an MBBS degree or equivalent from a recognized institution

  • Be registered with the Nepal Medical Council

  • For foreign applicants: Registered in the medical council of their home country

  • One year clinical experience (not required for MDGP and MD/MS in basic medical sciences)

  • Score at least 50% in the entrance exam conducted by the Medical Education Commission (MEC)

Entrance Examination Details

  • Format: Single best-answer multiple choice questions

  • Options: Four (A, B, C, D)

  • Total Questions: 200

  • Distribution: Recall 30%, Understanding 50%, Application 20%

  • Duration: 3 hours (with a one-time voluntary toilet break after the first hour)

Curriculum Structure

Theory Papers:

  • Paper I: Applied Basic Sciences – 80 marks

  • Paper II: Principles and Practice of Anaesthesia – 80 marks

  • Paper III: Subspecialties and Recent Advances in Anaesthesia – 80 marks

Practical Exams:

  • Clinical Cases (Long/Semi-long/Short) – 100 marks

  • OSCE (10–20 stations) – 100 marks

  • Viva (2 tables: 1 external + 1 internal examiner per table) – 100 marks

Year-wise Objectives

First Year

  • Manage anesthesia for low-risk (ASA Grade I) patients

  • Perform and demonstrate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Begin thesis planning and submit the research proposal

  • Develop communication skills

  • Interpret radiology reports, ECGs, and basic lab investigations

Second Year

  • Manage anesthesia for higher-risk patients (ASA Grade III & IV)

  • Provide regional and intravenous anesthesia

  • Handle specialized surgeries such as obstetric and pediatric cases

  • Complete clinical posting in the medical department

  • Teach junior students

  • Finalize thesis work

  • Organize departmental activities

Third Year

  • Manage anesthesia for highly specialized surgeries such as cardiac and neurosurgery

  • Handle patients requiring long-term ventilation

  • Complete a 6-month elective in any of the following areas:

    • Eye centers (e.g., orbital blocks for 2 weeks)

    • Critical care at Kanti Children’s Hospital (1 month)

    • Surgical camps (2 weeks)

    • Other clinical or basic science areas based on student needs or faculty recommendation

    • Pain management

  • Defend the thesis

  • Participate in academic or organizational activities
