On October 26, 2001, the Central Department of Environmental Science (CDES) was founded under the auspices of Tribhuvan University's (TU) Institute of Science and Technology. The purpose of the CDES-TU, which was established with the goal of becoming a center of academic excellence, has been to generate knowledge and create qualified human resources in the field of the environment through teaching, learning, and research. 2018 saw the CDES-TU receive accreditation and quality assurance in its academic pursuits from the University Grants Commission of Nepal.
The CDES-TU wants to be a center of excellence that respects social responsibility and scientific ideals. It also wants to be an inclusive learning environment that fosters the development of skills and the production of thoughtful global leaders and citizens.
The highly skilled faculty at CDES-TU has expertise doing post-doctoral and doctoral research. These faculties cover a wide range of academic disciplines, including ecological restoration, geographic science, terrestrial ecosystems, and aquatic ecosystems. The varied is equipped with various field gear and necessary field gears to facilitate the field experiment/research. The department has separate wet and dry laboratories for M.Sc. and PhD researchers to conduct indoor experimental work. Additionally, the department collaborates with academic institutions both domestically and internationally to access cutting-edge research facilities. As of right now, the department collaborates with around 25 international institutions, including research organizations, universities, government agencies, INGOs, and NGOs.
Approximately 1000 M.Sc. graduates in environmental science have already graduated from the CDES-TU. It has also finished one cycle of the M.Sc. program in Environmental Health in Disaster Management. In a similar vein, eleven PhD researchers from the department have successfully defended their theses to date. The CDES-TU now employs 25 PhD researchers. Academically speaking, faculty members at CDES-TU have achieved recognition by having their research published in esteemed national and international journals. The researchers and faculty members have published over 200 academic publications in the past five years. Furthermore, from 2013, the CDES-TU has been consistently publishing the Nepal Journal of Environmental Science. Additionally, the department publishes books, research reports, annual reports, strategic plans, communication reports to the government of Nepal.
